Yield

The annual income (dividends or interest) a security pays, as a percentage of its price.

Why it matters

For stocks, dividend yield = annual dividend / price. For bonds, yield to maturity accounts for coupon plus any premium or discount. Rising prices lower yields; falling prices raise them.
