Time value of money

A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow, because of what it could earn in between.

Why it matters

Every calculation involving future values (retirement projections, loan payments, bond prices) implicitly uses time value of money via a discount rate. It's the reason compound growth and compound debt both matter so much.
