Hard inquiry

A credit check tied to a loan or credit application that can slightly lower your score.

Why it matters

Hard inquiries stay on your credit report for two years and typically lower your score by a few points for a few months. Multiple mortgage or auto inquiries within 14–45 days count as one for scoring purposes.
