FDIC insurance

Federal insurance that protects up to $250,000 per depositor per bank per ownership category.

Why it matters

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation guarantees deposits at member banks. Joint accounts, retirement accounts, and trust accounts each have their own $250,000 limit, so a household can easily insure well over $500,000 by structuring accounts carefully.
