Employer match

The portion of your 401(k) contribution that your employer adds on top.

Why it matters

Common formulas: 100% of the first 3% you contribute, or 50% of the first 6%. Contributing at least enough to capture the full match is universally the highest-return move in personal finance — it's a 50% or 100% immediate return.
