Cost basis
What you originally paid for a security, used to calculate capital gains at sale.
Why it matters
Cost basis includes the purchase price plus reinvested dividends and commissions. Selling above basis is a gain; below basis is a loss. Brokerages track basis for you but you should verify on year-end statements.
