Debt in collections

A delinquent debt that the original creditor has sold or assigned to a collection agency.

Why it matters

Collections stay on your credit report for seven years from the original delinquency, even if paid. Paid medical collections under $500 are no longer reported. Never acknowledge or make a partial payment on a time-barred debt without understanding your state's statute of limitations — it can restart the clock.
