Negotiate the out-the-door price, not the monthly payment

Decline unnecessary add-ons

Extended warranties, paint protection, gap insurance sold at markup — most are more expensive at the dealer than after.

Test drive at highway speed

Ten minutes on side streets isn't enough. Get on the highway; listen for anything unusual.

Get a vehicle history report (used cars)

Carfax or AutoCheck. Look for accidents, title issues, and gaps in the service record.

Confirm insurance is active before driving off the lot

Call your insurer from the dealership to bind coverage on the new VIN.

Register the car and get your plates within the deadline
